There are probably not many in the USA right now who are feeling good about the economy. There are debates on every level and every aspect of the economy and even around kitchen tables… and whether the raising of taxes will help or hinder. The conservative point of view is that raising taxes has never helped the economy but rather hinders it. The liberal side is that making the government bigger and making the people dependent on the government (raising taxes and creating more government intervention) will help the economy.

Regardless of my opinion or yours, the nation will continue (hopefully) and will do one or the other. What I would like to concentrate on, is the fact that there is not… and never has been…financial security in this world… (except one way). We have had this fact revealed more clearly the past two years and in the 1930’s when the great depression came upon our nation.

But there is financial security. Not the ‘piles of riches’ kind of security but the ‘having enough’ kind of security. Jesus has an answer to this wide-spread problem…in the Bible, (God’s Holy Word).

It is alarming how fast we could lose our bank accounts, stocks and securities and other things including becoming homeless. There is NO financial security outside of Jesus Christ.

We can have what we need.

Jesus said in Matthew 6: 24-34: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. “

This saying of Jesus about our generosity is especially enlightening:

Luke 6:38: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
